A successful first event which was also a new event this season. We also had a view of the LSL ‘The Chairman’s Train’ as it crossed Ribblehead viaduct on its way to London Euston.
Following a talk on navvy life and the glory of the coming of the line through Ribblehead, we set off to Thorns to share a different message. The rise of the railway had its part in bringing the end of droving and the eventual abandonment of Thorns
On route we passed the entrances to Runscar and Thistle caves which are a popular choice for new cavers. These travel less than 300m underground with spectacular formations and fossils.
After an introduction to Thorns field kiln we crossed the packhorse bridge to follow the drovers route to Thorns house with it’s wash house,& dairy, the farm house with its kitchen & ‘privy’ and the adjacent barn. These form the 3 buildings with a clear structure remaining.
We were frequently accompanied by a chorus from oystercatchers, curlews and skylarks.
Back at the visitor centre the team offered a shorter walk to the viaduct and discussed our exhibits with a steady group of visitors.
If you missed this event you can join us again later in the season. Pick up a leaflet from stations along the line. Our next event is Rocks and Rails.
